Experience the Majestic Company of Birds of Prey

Welcome to Cornwall Falconry with Gerard and Gemma. We are a small family business offering private bird-of-prey experiences. Not in a busy centre environment, but here on our farm. Our experiences are very hands-on, where the birds fly free in their natural environment.

We have been providing award-winning bird of prey experiences since 2012 and now from our new location in Cornwall. All our experiences will be private, making your visit extra special, and creating everlasting memories.

Meet Some of Our Unique Raptors

The Bay Winged Hawk

(Parabuteo unicinctus)

The Bay-Winged Hawk, also known as the Harris’s Hawk, is a striking and highly intelligent bird of prey native to the Americas. Its name comes from the rich, reddish-brown "bay" colouration on its wings and shoulders, which contrasts beautifully with its dark brown body and white-tipped tail. These medium-sized hawks are known for their social nature, often hunting and living in groups—a rare behaviour among raptors. This teamwork allows them to take down larger prey and adapt to a variety of habitats, from arid deserts to woodlands.

Bay-Winged Hawks are a favourite in falconry due to their trainability, calm disposition, and cooperative nature. Their intelligence and ability to work closely with humans make them excellent partners for interactive experiences. Watching a Bay-Winged Hawk in flight is mesmerizing, as they effortlessly glide through the air, demonstrating incredible precision and agility. At Cornwall Falconry, we’re proud to showcase these magnificent birds and give visitors the chance to connect with their unique personalities and behaviours up close.

The Lanner Falcon

(Falco biarmicus)

The Lanner Falcon is a graceful and agile bird of prey, known for its incredible speed and precise hunting skills. Native to parts of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, the Lanner Falcon thrives in open landscapes such as grasslands, savannas, and desert edges. With its sleek, pale body, striking dark moustache markings, and long, pointed wings, the Lanner Falcon is a visual marvel in flight. Unlike the Peregrine Falcon, which relies on sheer speed in a stoop, the Lanner Falcon is renowned for its strategic hunting methods, often working cooperatively with a mate to flush and chase down prey.

The Lanner Falcon has been a cherished bird in falconry for centuries due to its intelligence, adaptability, and temperament. It is less aggressive than some other falcons, making it a favourite for close, interactive experiences. Watching a Lanner in action is a mesmerizing experience, as it demonstrates incredible aerial acrobatics and precision. At Cornwall Falconry, we are proud to work with this majestic species, offering our visitors a chance to connect with one of nature’s most skilled hunters and learn about its unique characteristics and role in the ecosystem.

The Barn Owl

(Tyto alba)

The Barn Owl is one of the most iconic and enchanting birds of prey, easily recognised by its heart-shaped face, pale plumage, and silent flight. Often referred to as the "ghost owl" due to its ethereal appearance and nocturnal habits, the Barn Owl is a master of stealth. Its specialised feathers allow it to fly almost noiselessly, making it an incredibly efficient hunter of small mammals like mice and voles. These owls are found worldwide, thriving in open countryside, farmlands, and even old barns—hence their name.

A symbol of mystery and wisdom in folklore, the Barn Owl has an otherworldly charm that captivates people of all ages. Its haunting screech and graceful movements in the twilight hours make it a fascinating creature to observe. At Cornwall Falconry, we’re privileged to care for these beautiful owls and share their incredible adaptations and stories with our visitors. Whether soaring through the dusk skies or perched calmly in your presence, the Barn Owl never fails to inspire awe and wonder.

The Tawny Owl

(Strix aluco)

The Tawny Owl is a captivating woodland owl, well known for its classic "twit-twoo" call that echoes through forests and rural landscapes at night. With its rounded body, mottled brown plumage, and large dark eyes, the Tawny Owl is perfectly camouflaged for life among the trees. This medium-sized owl is primarily nocturnal and thrives in dense woodlands, parks, and even gardens, where it hunts small mammals, birds, and insects.

Tawny Owls are fiercely territorial and often bond with a single mate for life, defending their home ranges with determination. Their hauntingly beautiful calls are often a duet between males and females, adding a magical soundtrack to the night. At Cornwall Falconry, we’re proud to share the secrets of these elusive and charming birds with our visitors. Meeting a Tawny Owl up close is an unforgettable experience, offering a rare glimpse into the life of one of Britain’s most iconic nocturnal predators.

The Long-Eared Owl

(Asio otus)

The Long-Eared Owl is a striking and mysterious bird of prey, recognised for its tall, feathered ear tufts that give it its name. These tufts, though not ears at all, are thought to help with camouflage by breaking up the owl’s silhouette. Its slender body, mottled brown and gray plumage, and vivid orange eyes make the Long-Eared Owl a truly mesmerizing sight. Found across Europe, Asia, and North America, this nocturnal owl prefers dense woodlands near open areas where it can hunt for small mammals under the cover of darkness.

Long-Eared Owls are masters of stealth, flying silently and blending seamlessly into their surroundings during the day. Their haunting, low-pitched hoots and whistles often go unnoticed, adding to their secretive nature. Unlike some solitary owls, they occasionally roost communally in winter, creating a remarkable spectacle for those lucky enough to spot them. At Cornwall Falconry, we are delighted to introduce visitors to this elegant and enigmatic owl, offering a chance to appreciate its beauty and learn about its vital role in the ecosystem.

The Gyrfalcon

(Falco rusticolus)

The Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) is the largest and most powerful falcon in the world, renowned for its strength, speed, and striking beauty. Native to Arctic regions, this majestic bird is well-adapted to cold climates, with thick plumage and a robust body built to endure harsh environments. Gyrfalcons come in various colour morphs, ranging from pure white to dark gray, making them one of the most visually stunning raptors. Their powerful flight and fearless hunting techniques allow them to take down prey as large as geese, showcasing their incredible prowess in the wild.

Highly prized in falconry for centuries, the Gyrfalcon represents the pinnacle of raptor performance and elegance. Its regal presence and commanding flight inspire awe in all who see it. At Cornwall Falconry, we’re honoured to work with this extraordinary species, giving visitors a rare opportunity to witness the grace and power of the Gyrfalcon while learning about its natural history and role in its Arctic ecosystem.
